Every week brings another headline: a new model, a new capability, another profession supposedly on the verge of disruption. The frenzy is understandable. When a technology promises to rewrite the rules of productivity, creativity, and even competitive advantage, the rational fear is being the last one to arrive at the party. But in this particular race, the entry fee is often paid in the currency most people undervalue until it is gone: personal data and privacy.

Network segmentation, zero-trust architectures, and regular penetration testing are not optional extras — they are baseline requirements when the data being protected belongs to patients who had no meaningful choice about sharing it.

For governments, the priority is regulatory clarity at speed. AI development is outrunning the frameworks designed to govern it. Data protection laws written before the current generation of LLMs are insufficient for the current landscape. Regulators need to establish clear rules on what data can be used to train commercial AI models, what consent standards apply, and what remedies exist when breaches occur. International coordination matters enormously: data does not respect borders, and regulatory arbitrage — companies basing their data operations wherever rules are weakest — is already a live problem.

The AI FOMO narrative is, in many ways, a constructed one. The companies most eager to accelerate adoption are often the same ones who benefit most from the data that adoption generates. The urgency is real in some domains, but in many everyday contexts, the cost of waiting six months to adopt a new tool — and using that time to understand it properly — is near zero. Technology adoption has always carried a tradeoff between the early-mover advantage and the cost of being an early-mover guinea pig. In the AI era, that cost is measured not just in buggy software experiences, but in the permanent surrender of sensitive personal information to commercial entities whose long-term incentives may not align with individual welfare.

The question is not whether to engage with AI. The question is whether engagement can be made thoughtful, conditional, and informed. That requires individuals to slow down, businesses to build proper governance, and governments to act with the urgency they currently reserve for economic competition rather than citizen protection.

Every generation faces a technology that arrives faster than the wisdom to govern it. The printing press, electricity, the internet — each created profound opportunity and profound risk simultaneously. AI is no different.
